The big summer season is just around the corner, and with it comes the promise of color.

Specifically, lip color. This season sees the return of bold, statement lips, but now done in fresh variations. First up, we've got bright, vivid hues of lemon, teal and tangerine coming straight from the runways of designers like Mary Katrantzou, Jason Wu, and our very own Michael Cinco. Quick Tip: Bright lips like these are statement enough; wear them with a nude or natural face to keep from looking clownish, or overwhelmingly colored.
Next we've got what's being called "the new black" in lipstick: wine. Vino-inspired lippies are a great alternative to the common red variety, as they take a much more dramatic and infinitely more grown-up approach to rouged lips. Donna Karan's Spring/Summer 2012 show is the perfect example of this—dark, matte, and neatly drawn.
Lastly comes a version of the wine-some trend: lips stained from the inside out. Our favorite look hails from the catwalk of Prabal Gurung, whose purple-to-pink lips hit the feel for spring spot on. To apply this, take a bright fuchsia lipstick and use it as a base. Then with a darker, violet liptint, dab the color onto the inner sections of your lip, going for a subtle Sauvignon pout.
