Be it spring or fall, the one trend that'll make it big in 2012 is the boat neckline. Coined from the wide-necked hemline that sailors of old used to sport, the boatneck is fresh and comfortable, showing some sexy shoulder skin without having to bare it all. Key designers include Dolce & Gabbana, Emilio Pucci, and Blumarine.
Peplum may have seen its hayday back in the '80's, but this season sees its return to many of the world's major runways. Designers like Jason Wu, Badgley Mischka, and Dries Van Noten have all presented their versions of the structured-yet-ladylike bottom. The volume it creates on the hips works to make one's waist appear much smaller than it really is, making it one of the season's favorite picks.
Shorts for summer. We know, groundbreaking. But this season's crop offers the wardrobe staple in a hip new variation. This time, shorts stay well away from the body, creating dramatic volumes and shapes in their wide-legged forms. It's a throwback to the 1940's when wearing too-tight shorts was a little too shocking. Designers like Rachel Comey, Dries Van Noten, and Phillip Lim made some of the best versions this season.
In a tropical country like ours, summer suits are just too good to pass up on. Cool and easy to wear, but still layered enough to look dressy, a good summer suit is going to be one of this year's best investments. The trend is a reference to the summer suits of the '50's and '60's, but this time rendered in modern forms, with emphasis on wearing cute matching shorts.
Sheer fabrics spill over from last season's obsession. Key pieces came from designers like Jason Wu and Lanvin, who made daring day looks in varying degrees of transparency. The trend is perfect for the summer, keeping body heat at a low (or at least, your own!), and allowing for statement accessories to come in like an oversized metallic neckpiece or statement shoes that dress up the sheer fabric's laid-back feel.
