MEGA 100 List: Shoes

by Jacqui Halili Co-Salonga and Jose Castillo

It's usually the case that when watching runway shows, one focuses on the clothes. The makeup, the bags, even the shoes play supporting cast to the show's main event. But over the last few seasons we've been noticing how designers have been putting a lot more effort into creating really memorable and utterly irresistible shoes.

Now the failing economy may be behind this; many designer fans may not have been able to afford the dress, but the shoes? Keri! Or has it been the blogosphere's addiction to cutely-posed-in-a-totally-candid-way-feet? Well, whatever the reason, the important thing is that we found the best new shoe trends that you definitely need to try out this year. We even found a couple of local counterparts that you can avail of now.

Check out the top 5 shoe shapes we found below:

Our trusty stilettos have formed a different style this year—the new heel shape updates itself to a more curved effect, as manifested through Walter Steiger’s pumps and booties, which are reminiscent of how Roger Vivier treated some of the shoes he had designed in the past. This season, Givenchy has also given their current collection the same approach using this new silhouette coalesced with their beautiful ankle strap numbers. The label’s latest offering boasts a thinner version which makes onlookers think twice about how these slim pieces can carry any weight.

While 2011 initiated the strong return of boat shoes and espadrilles, these flat loafers look as comfortable and lush as they appear. Many would think that only Hugh Hefner would probably be able to pull these off, but a variety of designs have been produced in line with this shoe wonder. Christian Louboutin has given us a leopard version with tassels while Alexander McQueen has integrated their signature skull embroidery on their pieces.

As one of the most comfortable shoe types available, the wedge has been redesigned several times over and over every season, proving that there is a significant market that simply cannot live without them. The new wedge hails a more sensual and creative appearance that sparks a viable interest. Although some may find this style to be more trendy than the usual, we embrace the individuality of this distinct form, and are confident that those with a more adventurous sense toward fashion will surely submit to the individuality of this unique silhouette.
